Fluoride varnish is a safe and easy way to help protect your childŸ??s teeth against cavities.
The United Way of Tucson in partnership with the Pima County Health Department has applied fluoride varnish to over 300 preschool children in 10 Tucson area childcare centers since January 2007.
Please check with your local County Health Department or United Way to see if a similar program exists in your community!
Margaret Perry, a Registered Dental Hygienist finds that the procedure, a simple painting of the sticky fluoride varnish on the childŸ??s teeth, is well tolerated.
According to the American Dental Association two or more applications of fluoride varnish per year are effective in preventing cavities in the primary and permanent teeth of children and adolescents especially those that are exposed to less than the recommended level of fluoride - those living in areas without widespread water fluoridation and those that drink primarily bottled water without added fluoride.
In addition to fluoride, avoiding starchy snack foods, sugar sweetened drinks and desserts as well as seeing a dental professional on a regular basis will go a long way towards preventing dental decay.
